For nearly a decade, I have enjoyed being a Diabetologist. Diabetes is the most prevalent human metabolic disease resulting from loss and/or dysfunction of β-cells in pancreatic islets. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by autoimmune β-cell destruction and apoptosis plays a prominent role during T1D development. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) results from a progressive decline of β-cell function and chronic insulin resistance. Both T1D and T2D share the inevitable apoptotic fate of the β-cell. It is therefore important to understand the underlying mechanisms if this process is to be prevented or delayed.
I am mainly interested in β-cell apoptosis as, over the years, mechanistic studies have implicated various cellular pathways.
